Louisa County Department of Human Services

Thomas D. Pristow, MSW, ACSW
The mission of the Louisa County Department of Human Services is to protect children and strengthen families, in partnership with families and communities.

Every year, we work with hundreds of Louisa County families who are struggling and need help to keep their children safe and who may need temporary assistance through our Prevention Programs, SNAP (Supplemental Nutritional Assistance Program), Medicaid and TANF (Temporary Assistance to Needy Families) Programs. These programs provide a safety net for families and individuals who may be experiencing unemployment, single parenthood, aging, disability, or other life changing events.

Our work and decisions are guided by State of Virginia's Best Practice, Outcome based standards which articulates values and best practices that drive the work we do to protect our children, youth, and families.

I am proud of the work that we do and of our staff who dedicate themselves everyday to helping children and families improve their lives.

I hope that all Louisa County residents will find out how they can do their part to help children and families in their area. These families are our neighbors, family members, friends, community members, and fellow Virginians. They deserve our support, compassion, and help to get their lives back on track.

Our Vision

  3. We pay our bills on time and come in on budget;
  4. We have programs that work and we know why; and
  5. We treat each other with kindness, respect and compassion.
