SUMMARY:

Visually inspects commercial and residential buildings to determine compliance with the applicable edition of the Virginia Uniform Statewide Building Code. Must be able to read and/or review commercial and/or residential construction plans for code compliance. Assists the Division of Planning and Zoning possible zoning and/or erosion and sediment control infractions. Issue reports as necessary. Effectively deal with the public, contractors and/or design professionals as needed.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  1. Performs inspections of structures for code compliance.
  2. Examine the approved plans on site and verify compliance with the same.
  3. Explain building code requirements to property owners, building contractors, and other interested parties when requested.
  4. Assists the Department of Planning & Zoning to ensure compliance with setback guidelines, and erosion and sediment control, when possible infractions may occur.

Working Conditions and environmental hazards generally associated with the performance of the essential function of the position:

  • Employee is Subject to Outside Environmental Conditions: No effective protection from weather
  • Employee may be required to operate automobile during inclement weather.
  • Employee must negotiate construction sites in the performance of duties, including but not limited to climbing and crawling.

SUPPLEMENTAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Reviews Building plans for code compliance necessary for issuance of permits.
  • Attends Building Board of Appeals meetings as necessary.
  • Maintains certifications through continuing education as required

QUALIFICATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS:

  • At least three years of experience in general building construction, building, fire or housing inspections, and a general knowledge of plumbing, electrical or mechanical systems or a combination of education and experience, which would confer equivalent knowledge and ability.
  • Shall obtain certification in the appropriate subject area in accordance with the Virginia Certification Standards (13 VAC 5-21)

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Must possess a valid Virginia Driver's license and good driving record
  • Must meet and maintain compliance with standards as set forth in the County of Louisa Employee Handbook
