PURPOSE STATEMENT:
The job of Custodian was established for the purpose of maintaining an attractive, sanitary, and safe facility for staff and the public; providing equipment and furniture arrangements for meetings and events; and minimizing property damage, loss and liability exposure.
CLASSIFICATION:
Class: Custodian Reports to: Lead Custodian
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES (may vary with specific positions; this list is not exhaustive and may be supplemented as necessary):
- 1. Cleans assigned facilities for the purpose of maintaining a sanitary, safe, and attractive environment to include but not limited to the following:
- Clean offices, meeting rooms, kitchens, etc.
- Mop floors
- Vacuum all carpeted areas
- Dust all furniture and fixtures as required
- Wash and disinfect all restroom floors, walls, toilets, partitions and fixtures
- Clean mirrors and windows
- Replenish toilet tissue and soap as needed
- Empty all waste baskets and garbage cans
- Place garbage in outside trash dumpster
- Clean entrance and exits including glass, doors and hardware
- Keep outside entrances, sidewalks and parking lots clear of snow, trash and debris.
- Clean, wash and disinfect drinking fountains
- Clean kitchen sinks and countertops
- Wash and buff floors with floor polisher
- Spot clean walls and toilet partitions
- Report required maintenance repairs
- Report damages and acts of vandalism
- Unlock and secure buildings as required
- Ensure cleaning materials and supplies are stored in safe and orderly manner
- Maintain an adequate supply of cleaning materials and supplies
- Restock materials and supplies
- 2. Performs routine grounds keeping duties (e.g. picking up paper and other refuse and debris on grounds, and sweeping walks and entrances) for the purpose of maintaining grounds in a safe and attractive condition.
- 3. Opens and/or secures facilities (e.g. opening building access doors, opening gates, turning off lights, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring facilities are operational and safe for occupancy and/or minimizing property damage, equipment loss and potential liability to the County.
- 4. Communicate issues about safety and/or items requiring maintenance to supervisor for the purpose of providing information, obtaining repairs, ensuring safety, and/or scheduling special cleaning.
- 5. Maintain supplies and equipment (e.g. cleaning solutions, paper products, vacuum, mops, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring the availability of items required to properly maintain facilities.
- 6. Arranges equipment or furnishings (e.g. desks, tables, chairs, etc.) for the purpose of providing adequate arrangements for meetings, and special events.
- 7. Required to assist in snow removal for the purpose of maintaining a safe environment.
- 8. Attend service training when required (e.g. blood borne pathogens, cleaning solvents, floor care, first aid, etc.) for the purpose of receiving information on new and/or improved procedures.
OTHER DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Performs other duties within the department as assigned. This is an Essential Personnel position in the Department of General Services.
KNOWLEDGE SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
Knowledge Of:
- 1. Commercial cleaning and sanitizing procedures, chemicals, products, and equipment.
- 2. Workplace Hazardous Materials Information systems.
Ability To:
- 1. Follow written and oral instructions.
- 2. Read and understand labels and instructions, particularly on the use and application of cleaning chemicals and products.
- 3. Operate commercial cleaning equipment such as floor buffers, carpet cleaners, etc.
- 4. Establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers, supervisors, County employees and the general public.
- 5. Complete OSHA/Safety training as required.
- 6. Be flexible in responding to changes in schedules and job priorities.
- 7. Perform multiple tasks simultaneously.
- 8. Work with minimal supervision.
- 9. Understand and prioritize work plans to complete assignments with quality work and in a timely manner.
- 10. Acquire additional skills to maintain technical competencies.
- 11. Present a professional, positive and helpful attitude at all times when interacting with County employees, co-workers and the general public. Exhibits an understanding of Human Relations and functions as a "team player".
- 12. Observe maintenance needs requiring attention and report those to the appropriate supervisor.
- 13. Maintain a high level of professionalism and confidentiality.
ADVERSE WORKING CONDITIONS / ENVIRONMENTAL HAZARDS
- 1. Exposure to cleaning solutions and chemicals.
- 2. Exposure to blood borne pathogens, saliva and other bodily fluids.
- 3. Exposure to inclement weather.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
- 1. May be required to lift up to 50 pounds occasionally.
- 2. Must possess strength, stamina and mobility to perform the physical demands of the job to include significant lifting, carrying, pushing and/or pulling, frequent stooping, crouching, crawling, and fine finger dexterity. Generally, the job requires 50% walking, and 50% standing.
- 3. Specific vision abilities required include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus.
- 4. Hearing and speech to communicate in person and over the telephone and/or radio.
- 5. Any employee may be required to stay at or return to work during public health incidents and/or emergencies to perform duties specific to this classification or to perform other duties as requested in an assigned response position. This may require working a non-traditional work schedule or working outside normal assigned duties during the incident and/or emergency.
- 6. Must be available for regular standby assignments and work scheduled for regular standby assignments; for work scheduled off-hours; for emergency overtime as required.
ACCEPTABLE EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING:
- 1. High School diploma or GED equivalency; and
- 2. Two years of verifiable commercial custodial experience to include experience with commercial cleaning equipment (e.g. floor polishers, carpet cleaners, etc.) OR any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities
SPECIAL QUALIFICATIONS:
- Must submit to Criminal Background and DMV Record Check and testing consistent with Louisa County's Drug-Free Workplace Policy.
